The Best Steps I Took to Increase My Salary

When I was working in the corporate world, I never really felt like I was at my full potential or getting better from just doing my job. Also, I felt like my salary reflected it too. I was good at my job and the pay was pretty good as well. I just wasn’t happy getting up in the morning to head out to work. Especially when I knew exactly how my day was going to go. There was never anything to get me excited about the day. Until I took it upon myself to change it all one day. I told myself I was going to get the money I wanted and the position I wanted that would make me want to come to work!
Identify
First thing I had to do had a meeting with myself. Really it was to get a self-assessment to get a real understanding of what I at an excellent level and what I don’t. After I got all that together I went to see what positions would best fit my skills best, which want I felt I could do well, and which one had the salary I wanted. All the positions my skills fit I wasn’t interested in those at all. The ones I felt I could do there was some things I was miss in order for them positions. It was the same for the ones that had the salary I wanted as well.
Enhancement
Based off all the information I had gathered my friends; I knew that I had to enhance myself. I would have to take some courses I could take and earn certifications for the first steps I needed to take to get to the point where I wanted to be. So, I got into the courses I needed to earn the certifications I needed. But I would also need to advanced degree in order to be qualify as well. So, I went back to school online. What you can take from this is to acquire in-demand skills so you will be in demand.
Be Valuable
While I was working on my enhancements, I was also making sure I was showing the company that I was an asset as well. I did this by going above and beyond for the company. Taking on extra responsibilities, handling tasks that I knew would stand out from someone in my position. One way I did this was by bring in new business for the company. This way I could introduce the new business to the people above me. Now this way they can see my face and know where this money is coming from.
Networking
Doing the steps above will organically bring you here. You will organically start making new relationship with the right people. You may end up building with people who matter. Now you may end up skipping some steps someone else would need to take. Because you build a relationship with someone. So, try and network and build relationships internally at your workplace.
The Approach
Being prepared for the approach I wanted to take. I had to get ready to negotiate with facts. I made sure I had a record of all my accomplishments, any positive feedback I had got during the time, and any awards or recognitions as well. Also, I wanted to have a full understand of my leverage. So, I could really point out I’m the right one for the position. I made sure I looked and sounded very professional as well. I waited till performance reviews to take my shot.
Opportunities
While I was waiting to hear back from my job. I had started to look for other opportunities as well. Inside the company and outside of the company as well. I knew looking internal word could get around if an opportunity came my way. And if I got an opportunity from outside, I could use that as more leverage as well. I didn’t want them to feel like this was my only opportunity out there. You have to show them you have value.
Bonus – 3 Things That Improve the Odds of Success
Success doesn’t walk through your front door while you’re watching television eating snacks. Some people get lucky gambling or playing the lottery, Tomato potato. Maybe they are even born into better situations than other. Maybe you’re not as fast as a learner as most people. Even when the odds seem to be against you don’t mean you can’t have success in your life. I have 3 ways you can improve your odds of success. Put these to use and you should at least see a improved difference in your life.

First thing you’ll need is a plan. You should write down whatever you want to achieve. I don’t care how small it may seem or how unbelievable it is just write it down. Once you done that, think about a realistic timetable to get it done. Give yourself time to actually get it do, plan for set backs. No plan runs as smoothly as you think it will. After that I want you to write down a date next too it. A dream written down with a date becomes a goal. Now the next part of plan is to set steps you’ll need to achieve this goal. A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan.

The next thing you’ll need is a new mindset. My favorite quote of all time is. “You can’t change your life by changing your life, you can only change your life if you change your way of thinking”. If you get up with doubt every morning, you might not ever get where you want to be. If you feed into negativity around you, how will you get to where you need to be. The negativity will come along the way, it always does. You just have to have tunnel vision. Mentally you have to be ready to go through every emotions, every emotions. If you can do that at the end you’ll be just fine.

A plan backed by action makes your dreams come true. Elon Musk said, “ Work like hell. I mean you just have to put in 80 to 100 hour weeks every week. This improves the odds of success. If other people are putting in 40 hours workweeks and you’re putting in 100 hour workweeks, then even if you’re doing the same thing, you know that you will achieve in 4 months what it takes them a year to achieve “. So if you have a goal to save 5,000 in two years, and you only working a part time job. You need a part time job as well. You are going to need a crazy work ethic.
If you can implement these 3 things in your journey to success, I’m sure you will reach it no matter the odds against you. That journey won’t be easy, but the hard times are necessary to reach success. Every journey is different so just following someone else exact steps may not work for you. Don’t be afraid to go get what you want.
Summary
In summary make sure you follow up with the company after your approach. Ask them for feedback, so you can know where you went wrong and right. Stay professional no matter what happens. You don’t want to mess up any relationships. Focus on always being better at what you’re doing. Or enhancing your skills if you want more.
